Antoni Wojciechowski

     Antoni Wojciechowski (June 6, 1095 – January 19, 38) was a well-known player in Poznan, Poland in the 1920s and 1930s.  Between the two World Wars, Wojciechowski was one of the strongest Polish masters and defeated players like David Przepiorka, Rudolf Spielmann and Miguel Najdorf.
     In 1926, he tied for 2nd-3rd in the Poznan championship and won the Poznan Chess Club Championship. In 1928, he won the Poznan championship for the second time. Wojciechowski represented Poznan at the Polish Team championships in1929 and 1934. He took 16th place in the 3rd Polish Championship at Warsaw 1935 which won by Savielly Tartakower.  
     Wojciechowski played for Poland on the eighth board scoring +7 –2 =5 in the 3rd unofficial Chess Olympiad at Munich 1936. 
     He took 11th place in the 4th Polish championship held in Jurata in 1937, again won by Tartakower.  All sources say this was the 4th Polish Championship, but looking at the crosstable there were some non-Poles playing.  I am not sure how to explain that except that perhaps the title of Polish Champion went to the highest scoring Pole.

     Wojciechowski is probably best known for his famous combination in a game against Tylkowski at Poznań 1931. For details on this game refer to a discussion on the Ortueta-Sanz Hoax. 
     Suffering from poverty and poor health, he died of pneumonia at the age of 32.
